VALENCIA, A BRIEF ON ITS CULTURE AND MUSICAL HERITAGE The Autonomous Valencia Land, officially Comunitat Valenciana, ocupies a big chunk of Eastern Spain that conforms a piece of land like a corniche of 200 miles along the warm Mediterranean coast and spanning up to the cooler high lands in the inner country. The area has been known traditionally in Spain and Europe like a rich farming area wich exported oranges, rice (paella was born here) and vegetables due to its mild climate as well as manufactures like potery or silk products. Nowadays the region is a industrialized area which exports comprise since light consumer goods (shoes, ceramics, furniture) to high-tech products like cars and automotive or computer parts, as well as an intermnational touristic destination beign farm exports testimonial but deeply rooted in our culture. The traditional society and its heritage is thus with this scenario posed to extingish. However the exceptional richness of Valencia culture fruit of a mixed of Northern influences (Catalonian, being the first who reconquered the Country to the Moors at XIII century, giving us their language, here frequently refered as Valencian), in addition to those of overall Mediterranean influences as well as Southern (Moorish and Andalusian) Castillian and Aragoneses created a cultural body of exceptional richness, specially when dealing with musical or folk-dance lore, even by Spanish standards |
